Beleive it or not, Cats do detect the humor of Humans. THey can know when your're happy or sad, angry or calm... from a personal experience.

I used to live in a house where there was a cat called Lilly, it was subject to violence by her ancient "proprietaires". Lilly was very sensible , very asocial and lonely. You can feel it. You would have seen her when her masters travelled and i was alone with her. Lilly passed two days passing from a room to another searching for them...
my friend's cat is always looking at me as if she's saying "please play with me" but i just can't

Alia, same here. i have an issue with animals. but that kitty looked so tiny and afraid..
